These Black Bean Burgers are a delicious and satisfying plant-based alternative to traditional beef burgers. Packed with savory flavors and a great texture, they're perfect for a healthy weeknight meal, a backyard BBQ, or a casual lunch. Enjoy them on a bun with your favorite toppings or served alongside a fresh salad.
Ingredients
Directions
Place the rinsed and drained black beans in a large bowl. Using a fork or potato masher, mash about 3/4 of the beans, leaving some whole for texture.
Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped red onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Remove from heat.
Add the sautéed onion and garlic mixture to the mashed black beans.
Stir in the cooked brown rice, breadcrumbs, egg (or flax egg), cumin powder, smoked paprika, and chili powder (if using).
Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Mix everything thoroughly with your hands until well combined.
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a firm, flat patty, about 1 inch thick. Critical tip: Ensure the patties are firm so they don't fall apart during cooking. If the mixture is too wet, add a little more breadcrumbs.
Heat a large non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium heat. Add enough olive oil to lightly coat the bottom of the pan.
Carefully place the black bean patties in the hot pan. Cook for 5-7 minutes per side, or until golden brown and heated through. Adjust heat if necessary to prevent burning.
While the burgers are cooking, toast your burger buns.
Once the burgers are done, immediately transfer them to the toasted buns.
Layer with fresh lettuce leaves, tomato slices, and red onion slices.
Add your favorite toppings and sauces.
Serve hot and enjoy your homemade Black Bean Burgers!
